General information

This is an orienteering competition in which teams of Cubs (minimum three, maximum five Cubs) complete a short course using a compass and compass bearings.

Please arrive at around 13:30 to allow the competition to start at around 14:00. I have to take adults around the course so that the bases are staffed.

The course generally takes around 30 to 40 minutes to complete if they do not go wrong. Teams go out at around 2 minute intervals and we are usually finished by around 15:30.

The compass work is pretty simple and fairly rudimentary knowledge will suffice so please do not be put off if you are not brilliant with a compass.

Each team will need:

  • At least one Silva type compass.
  • A whistle for emergencies.
  • Pencils.
  • Suitable clothing dependant on the weather. Cubs should wear cub neckerchief and sweatshirt. The sweatshirt can be taken off for the actual competition.
  • STRONG footwear. The paths can get very muddy. As this is a race wellingtons are not necessarily the best things.

The cost is £1 per competitor. Please pay on the day. Each Pack can enter as many teams as they wish.

Adult help needed

Please could each team you enter bring along one adult who can staff a base. Please advise the adults that they will be on the base for some time so it is good to come as a pair for company or bring a book!

Information for Leaders only

If you could let District have some indication of the number of teams you hope to enter that would be great; please refer to the original email, or contact if you can not find the information. However, if you do not have time please just turn up on the day as I am sure we will be able to accommodate you.

I understand that people find it quite difficult to find the entrance. If anybody has a large "Scouting" flag that we could put at the entrance that might help.
